I would love to have had the chance, Hilary! It was a lovely shop, but I (try to) understand the owners' decision to close it rather than sell it off. I'm sure it's a bar or something now, must ask my parents. xx

Thanks for the button tip! I think one of the reasons I dislike sewing on buttons is that I feel I never really learnt how to do it properly - silly really, it should be the first thing that you learn.

I can't think of what I like least about sewing. I hate that I have a pinched nerve in my neck that makes it very uncomfortable or painful to sew for long periods of time. I guess I don't like doing pattern markings. It is so tedious.
I have a little tip for buttons though. I saw my tailor doing this: quadruple your thread! Fold your thread in half and stick the two ends through the needle, then tie all four strands in a knot. I will never go back to one or two threads for my buttons and snaps again.

Aw, this is lovely! Obviously the entire internet knows my feelings about the ancient wisdom of such tomes.

As an aside, my beloved great-aunt Sonia (RIP) went on a cooking course in Italy taught by Marcella Hazan - her main memory was Hazan smoking constantly. What a don.
